City well represented in Sunday Times Giving List

A record number of donors gave more than £1m to charity last year, according to the new edition of The Sunday Times Giving List, with City financiers among the top givers.

Hedge fund multi-millionaire Chris Hohn, investment banker Jonathan Ruffer and Dr. Leonard S. Polonsky, executive chairman of international financial services company Hansard Global, were among the top 15 givers along with celebrities Elton John, Bono and Colin Montgomerie.

New report lifts lid on early stage social investment

A new report offers a warts-and-all view of the realities of early stage social investment based on UnLtd’s Big Venture Challenge (BVC) pilot launched in 2011 and funded by Big Lottery.

The pilot supported 25 ambitious social entrepreneurs to expand their work by helping them to attract investment. The programme also sought to attract investors to the social finance market through a combination of match-funding and other support to capitalise social ventures.

Foundation giving up 10%, despite 10% fall in income

Foundation grant-making has risen by 10% in real terms, despite a drop in income of around the same amount according to new figures from The Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF). The top 300 ACF member foundations by grant-making gave £2.4bn to charitable causes, around 14% of all giving.

Today: Join Lord Mayor for City’s Giving Day and help raise £686k

The City is celebrating its first ‘Giving Day’ today, July 11 to raise money for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal charities as well as to celebrate and encourage the generosity of the City.

Among the many activities planned is the opportunity to have tea with The Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of London Fiona Woolf in Guildhall Yard and to take part in the City’s Got Talent concert in the evening, which has attracted a number of bands.

Venture philanthropists looking for more than social return survey shows

The European venture philanthropy market continues to grow and professionalise according to the latest survey from the European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA), the key membership body.

In its third annual survey  for 2012/13, EVPA reports a 20% increase in average financial support per Venture Philanthropy Organisation (VPO) to €6.2m from 2011 to 2012 with over €2.5bn invested in the market since inception.
