5 financiers make Sunday Times Giving List top 10 donating more than £150m

Half of the top ten givers in this year’s Sunday Times Giving List have made their fortunes in global finance or insurance and have together donated more than £150m.

In total more than £2bn of charitable spending was captured by the 2013 Giving List published on April 21st, which ranks philanthropists according to the proportion of their wealth given to charity.

ARK gala fundraiser shelved in favour of smaller events

The Absolute Return for Kids (ARK) star-studded fundraising gala dinner, an annual fixture for London’s top hedge fund managers and celebrities which raises all of the charity's funding in a single night, will not take place this year as ARK moves to a more intimate strategy to engage donors.

Morgan Stanley raises £1.6m to buy Kids Company new home for counselling children

Joanna Lumley declared Morgan Stanley and its employees ‘ab fab’ for their  £1.6m donation that has bought a brand new therapy house for Kids Company enabling the charity to double the number of children, families and young people receiving one-to-one therapeutic support to help them overcome a childhood disrupted by violence, abuse and neglect.

The donation has now bought and renovated Kids Company’s first fully owned property that will be known as The Morgan Stanley Heart Yard and funds raised will also help the charity with the operating costs for the building.

Dragon Awards celebrating the best in community involvement now open for applications

The City’s long tradition of business-backed philanthropy will once again be celebrated in the Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards 2013 which is now open for applications.

Celebrating Corporate Community Involvement (CCI) in Greater London for over 25 years, the awards are open to businesses from all sectors, of all sizes and types of budgets, as well as charities and public bodies. 

Application from Small and Medium-sized Enterprises are particularly welcome and are judged separately from large business applications.

City Funding Network raises £23k in 11 minutes at second event

Young City professionals were among those who donated £23,000 in 11 minutes of frenetic  pledging to three dynamic social change charities at the second City Funding Network event held on April 22 at the historic Charterhouse, in Central London, itself long a symbol of philanthropy in the City.

The City Funding Network is part of City Philanthropy – a Wealth of Opportunity, funded by The City of London Corporation’s charity City Bridge Trust that aims to put philanthropy at the centre of City culture.

Capitalism in the spotlight as source of common good

The City is in navel-gazing mood and two recent events in the Square Mile have explored how capitalism and the financial services industry at large can be reformed for the common good.

At an event hosted by ShareAction, held at London's impressive Guildhall, the former US Vice President Al Gore – yes ‘that Al Gore’ he joked - called on members of civil society to invest their assets in a way that moves the concept of sustainable investment into the mainstream.
